Looming driving bans, land consumption and noise exposure are just some of the enormous challenges which many German cities are facing as a result of motorised traffic. Yet mobility is a basic requirement in our society. Making it environmentally friendly, healthy and space-saving is what local authorities and citizens will be demonstrating during European Mobility Week (EMW) from 16 to 22 September.

More and more municipalities in Germany are participating in European Mobility Week, with nearly 50 registered participants this year including nine capitals of federal states which have developed EMW campaigns for more sustainable local mobility. Citizens are experiencing up close how sustainable mobility might look in their own town or city: people in Leipzig will experience a car-free Lindenauer market, the joint campaign of the Hessian city of Rosbach vor der Höhe and its Polish twin town Ciechanowiec features many opportunities to try out bicycles, and Aachen’s residents are invited to join in a dialogue about car traffic in the city.

Dr. Thomas Holzmann, Vice-President of the German Environment Agency, said: “Traffic in the cities must become healthier, more environmentally friendly and space-saving. European Mobility Week is a chance for towns and cities to engage in dialogue with their residents and find out together how to realize sustainable local mobility.”

Germany’s participants are towns of all sizes, many of which are campaigning together with their twin towns and thus acting in the spirit of a united Europe to champion the cause of sustainable mobility across borders.

Further information:

European Mobility Week (EMW) is a European campaign which gives local authorities from all over Europe a chance to raise their residents’ awareness of the topic of sustainable mobility. Measures will be established in the week of 16 – 22 September and beyond which will lastingly make local transport more climate and environmentally friendly. More than 2500 MOBILITYACTIONS will be taking place in towns and cities across Europe. Since 2016 the German Environment Agency has been coordinator of EMW.
