NCA4 author teams, staff, and regional collaborators have been hard at work gathering input from stakeholders across the country through regional engagement workshops, webinars, and other public events. Chapter teams have received extensive training on chapter development, scientific resources and tools, and assessment writing through a chapter leadership meeting and regular webinars with all authors. Development of full, first order chapter drafts for interagency review in June is underway and on-schedule. Highlights of recent progress include:

• NCA4 staff, chapter authors, and regional collaborators held a series of engagement workshops throughout the NCA’s ten regions during February and March. The hub-and-satellite model allowed for participation of more than 1000 stakeholders and 46 cities around the Nation, the U.S. Caribbean, and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands. In addition, many NCA4 National Overview chapter teams have hosted public webinars to help inform their chapters and ensure that the assessment is responsive to the needs of stakeholders.

• NCA4 Coordinating Lead Authors and Chapter Leads met April 4–5 in Washington, DC, for training on aspects of chapter development and to identify areas of common interest and focus.

• A new scenario products website was released, providing updated documents, graphics, data sets, and other resources that depict a range of plausible future conditions against which risks, vulnerability, and opportunities can be assessed at regional and national scales: scenarios.globalchange.gov 

• Author training webinars have been held on tools and aspects of chapter development including risk-based framing and characterizing uncertainty, scenario products, climate indicators, metadata and the Global Change Information System, and other resources for authors including EPA’s Climate Change Impacts and Risk Analysis (CIRA) Project, the Climate Science Special Report, and climate change impacts on tribal and indigenous communities.

• Author teams are holding regular chapter calls and implementing customized chapter work plans to ensure delivery of a high-quality, full draft for interagency review by June 16.

• The draft interagency Climate Science Special Report, which provides the physical science foundation for NCA4, was reviewed by the public and National Academy of Sciences. NAS released its review of the draft report in February. Authors are currently responding to comments.

• A forum was held at the Joint North American Carbon Program and Ameriflux Principal Investigators Meeting, March 27–30, to provide updates on the interagency Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report and the overall progress of NCA4.
