The EGU has announced the 17 training schools in the Earth, planetary or space sciences that it will provide support for in 2019. In addition, the EGU is also funding two Galileo Conferences, and four conferences within the EGU conferences series. In total, the Union is contributing EUR 132,000 towards the organisation of geoscience conferences and training schools by EGU members.
EGU training schools offer early career scientists specialist training opportunities they do not normally have access to in their home institutions. In 2019, 17 training schools will receive EGU support to a total of 88,000 EUR. Selected out of 29 proposals, the training schools cover areas from snow science to geoscience communication.
In the summer call for funding, the EGU also welcomed proposals for conferences within the EGU conference series. In 2019, there will be a conference within the new Mary Anning series, as well as three conferences in more established EGU conference series (Leonardo, Emile Argand and the recently re-named Ada Lovelace workshops).
Last but not the least, the EGU received nine proposals for EGU Galileo Conferences and selected two. These events address well-focused, cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research and receive substantial support from the EGU. The ‘5th EGU Galileo Conference: Mass extinctions, recovery and resilience’ will take place in Utrecht, The Netherlands from 26 August to 1 September 2019, while the ‘6th EGU Galileo Conference: Perturbations of Earth surface dynamics caused by extreme events’ will happen on 13–19 October 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The EGU is currently accepting proposals for Galileo Conferences taking place during the March 2020 – February 2021 period. EGU members can propose to organise a Galileo Conference and apply for funding by the end of February 2019.
