FAO Land and water experts will converge on Berlin this week at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, during which, two FAO-organized events will take place, both on topics which are key to the future of sustainable food and agriculture.
First, on Thursday 19th January an expert panel discussion, co-organized by FAO and the Leibniz Research Alliance Food and Nutrition and the will address the question "Can wastewater contribute to food security?" Given the increasing competition over water usage, how can it be ensured that agriculture has access to water, and hence can provide the global population with food? What part can agriculture, as the largest user of water, play worldwide in the sustainable stewardship of water as a valuable resource?

The following day, an FAO-Organized High level panel will meet to discuss "Agricultural leadership in a water scarce world" significant parts of the world are struggling with water scarcity. In 2016, the World Economic Forum ranked water crises as the risk of highest concern for the next ten years – with significant implications for people and the global economy. Depending on how we manage it, “water” can significantly contribute or impede the achievement of both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
