Supporting clean technology will create good, middle-class jobs, improve the environmental performance of Canada’s oil and gas sector and help address climate change.

A new Calgary research facility will become the first of its kind in North America to test technology that could turn carbon dioxide emissions into usable commercial products, creating new revenue stream opportunities and middle-class jobs in the process.

On behalf of Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, the Honourable Kent Hehr, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre and Canada’s Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, today announced that the Government of Canada will provide up to $10 million to InnoTech Alberta’s Carbon Conversion Technology Centre project.

The Government of Alberta is matching the federal investment. InnoTech Alberta and Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) joint industry partnership are also providing in-kind contributions.

The specialized research facility, which will be located at the Shepard Energy Centre in Calgary, will allow researchers to test innovative carbon-use technologies at near-commercial scale with the goal of creating new, usable products such as building materials, alternative fuels and commercial goods — something that has not yet been done at that scale.

Innovation and technology collaboration and partnership is a key priority for the governments of Canada and Alberta. Minister Carr and Alberta’s Economic Development and Trade Minister, the Honourable Deron Bilous, recently signed an agreement to expand on previous collaborative partnerships between governments and the private sector on research for cleaner oil sands developments. 

The Government of Canada investment in Alberta’s Carbon Conversion Technology Center is part of Canada’s Mission Innovation commitment to double its funding for clean energy and clean technology research and development to $775 million by 2020.
