On 28 August 2018, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will present the book 'The Geography of Future Water Challenges', during the World Water Week in Stockholm.
During a sofa session, the Dutch Special Envoy for International Water Affairs, Henk Ovink, and Maimbo Malesu, Programme Coordinator Water Management at the World Agroforestry Centre, will be interviewed about the challenges faced by drylands, from both a global and a local perspective, with a focus on those in Africa.
African drylands are facing large changes, such as climate change and exponential population growth. By 2050, 330 million people will live in the drylands of western Africa. In eastern Africa, this will be 304 million. A doubling compared to 2010. The cities in these regions will house three times as many people as they do currently. Over that same period of time, their rural populations will also continue to grow.
With the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the New Urban Agenda, many countries have committed themselves to making the world more sustainable and inclusive. The Drylands Development Programme (DryDev) supports farmers in Africa through water management interventions. In addition, it looks more broadly at what is required from policy and how investment decisions can be influenced.
The sofa session will centre around the question of what would be needed to scale up local projects, and how to connect those projects to global objectives.
