Washington, D.C.—The American Geophysical Union (AGU), Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and The Oceanography Society (TOS) invite the local Portland, Ore. community to join them for Beauty and Artistic Inspiration from the Oceans: a film screening event for the films, Proteus and Fragile Legacy, during the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting. The Ocean Sciences Meeting is a biennial meeting of nearly 4,000 scientists from around the world who convene to present the latest research findings about the world’s oceans.

Proteus, an animated documentary, “explores the nineteenth century’s engagement with the undersea world through science, technology, painting, poetry and myth. The central figure of the film is biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel, who found in the depths of the sea an ecstatic and visionary fusion of science and art.” (Night Fire Films).

Fragile Legacy, a film narrated by Ted Danson, “combines art, science, history, conservation and adventure, following a global quest to find living representatives of sea creatures that were captured in glass over 150 years ago …The film celebrates nature’s diversity, human ingenuity and our potential to innovate our way to a sustainable future.”  (David Brown).

What: Beauty and Artistic Inspiration from the Oceans, a film screening event. The show will start at 6:30 pm with a 30-minute screening of The Fragile Legacy.  There will then be a short break followed by a screening of the film Proteus, which runs for 60 minutes. There will be short introductions to both films.

When: Thursday, February 15, at 6:30 p.m.
