Celebration events at the two locations follow the official launch of 12 Otago Landmarks in December last year.
Mike Tubbs, DOC's Operations Manager Central Otago District, says the Landmarks Whenua Tohunga programme helps tell the tales of New Zealand's past and connects visitors in a tangible way to our unique culture, stories and places.
"By combining culture and heritage with stunning landscapes, we're hoping visitors will enjoy more memorable and meaningful experiences, and then share this with others," says Mike.
The first of the two 27 January events involves a 'walk and talk' at the Bannockburn Sluicings, led by DOC and the Otago Goldfield Heritage Trust. Celebrations begin at 9.30 am at the Bannockburn Sluicings car park on Felton Road, with a plaque unveiling and morning tea, followed by the guided walk. The Sluicings are a spectacular man-made landscape that features the remains of the dams, tunnels, walls, and water races that were built in the 19th century to flush out gold from the surrounding hills.
The second event, celebrating the Otago Central Rail Trail, will be held at the Hyde Station. It begins at 3 pm and involves a plaque unveiling and afternoon tea, followed by a short walk along the rail trail to the Hyde township, led by DOC. Gold and pastoral farming were the heart of Central Otago's economy and the railway provided the life blood for these isolated communities.
Members of the public are welcome at the events, but need to register their attendance, for catering purposes.
