Dozens of colleagues gathered with the world's greatest living oceanographer this week for a symposium on Ocean Acoustics, National Security, and Walter Munk.

The two-day event at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society, and the Environment drew dozens of researchers whose work on sound in the ocean has involved or been inspired by Munk, whose career is being celebrated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UC San Diego during his centennial year. An earlier symposium on Internal Wave Breaking, Turbulence, and Ocean Mixing was held in May.

Munk will turn 100 in October, when the city of San Diego will honor his contributions by adding his name to street signs along a boardwalk near Scripps Oceanography. Details about upcoming events will be posted at on the Munk Centennial website.

Though Munk began his oceanographic work before World War II, he asked that this week's presentations be forward-looking and address "the next 100 years" of acoustic research for monitoring topics such as marine life, ocean conditions, climate change, and Arctic ice.
