THE Australian Government Department of Home Affairs is calling for employer nominations to join an expert advisory committee consulting on the Modern Slavery Reporting Requirement.
With the Modern Slavery Bill 2018 passing the House of Representatives on 17 September 2018 and now before the Senate, the Department has begun preparing guidance materials for reporting requirements.
The guidance materials will encourage entities to meaningfully engage with the Modern Slavery Reporting Requirement, which seeks to:
- assist businesses to identify whether they are required to report;
- encourage voluntary reporting;
- explain the process of preparing a Modern Slavery Statement
- highlight best practice case examples; and
- include advice on identifying modern slavery, risk assessment and management, supplier engagement and responding to identified incidences of modern slavery.
The Department intends to publish the guidance in early 2019, to coincide with the expected commencement of obligations under the Modern Slavery Act.
Employer reps sought for advisory committee
The Department will prepare the guidance in consultation with an expert advisory committee, comprising up to eight experts from business and civil society.
Advisers will be experts on business and human rights issues and have a range of expertise relevant to modern slavery reporting.
Experience in corporate social responsibility, supply chains management, sustainable procurement, and prior experience reporting under UK Transparency in Supply Chains legislation would be valuable.
Advisors will be required to participate in two full-day meetings with the Department as well as provide written comment and verbal advice on draft guidance materials.
