Signify has joined The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative and committed to operate a lease fleet of hybrid and fully electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030.

The news comes one week ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, where further announcements on electric mobility are expected from businesses, cities, states and regions.

Signify is already a member of RE100, the global corporate leadership initiative on 100% renewable electricity led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP.

By joining sibling initiative EV100, the global lighting company will extend its climate leadership, transitioning 2000 vehicles and installing charging infrastructure at all major office sites.

“By committing to electric vehicles through EV100, Signify is sending an important signal to the automobile industry to speed up the roll out of EVs around the world,” said Helen Clarkson, CEO, The Climate Group.

“Already a member of RE100, Signify’s charging points will run off renewable energy – maximizing the environmental benefit of its EVs while providing storage solutions.”

Looking ahead to the Global Climate Action Summit, and to Climate Week NYC 2018, she added, “To accelerate the transition to a clean energy system and demonstrate the demand policy makers need to set more stringent emissions goals, we need many more global businesses to step up and take the lead on EVs”.

Leading the charge on electric mobility

EV100 now brings together more than 20 leading companies committed to making electric transport ‘the new normal by 2030’. Forming part of The Climate Group’s ZEV Challenge with C40, EV100 members – alongside cities, states and regions – are signaling demand for a much faster mass roll-out of EVs around the world.

A joined-up approach

By choosing renewable electricity and electric vehicles for its own operations, coupled with business interest in advancing energy efficiency, Signify is taking a joined-up approach to accelerating the clean energy systems of the future.

In a new report with Rocky Mountain Institute, the global lighting leader calls on policymakers to guarantee resilient electricity grids, by developing integrated building and electric transport policies to balance grid capacity. 

Harry Verhaar, Head of Public and Government Relations at Signify, said: “We – both political and business leaders – need to act now and accelerate targeted integrated policy interventions that foster sustainable business and safeguard a healthy planet for future generations.”

Signify also partners with The Climate Group to increase the uptake of indoor LED lighting, and estimates a global switch to LEDs across the private sector could generate US$94 billion in cost savings. The Climate Group is calling on businesses to install connected LED lighting as a first step to becoming energy smart, lowering emissions and saving on energy bills.
