New Delhi: BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) committed today (World Environment Day, June 05, 2018) to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, becoming the first Indian utility to join The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative for accelerating the roll-out of electric transport worldwide.
As well as using EVs for its own operations, BYPL will encourage uptake among its business associates and 2400+ employees. BYPL also committed to deliver awareness programs for its 1.6 million customers in New Delhi on the benefits of EVs in reducing air pollution levels.
BYPL was one of the first utilities in India to install EV charging stations in 2010 for REVA electric cars. Now, the company will conduct a pilot to study the performance of EVs for utility services, and aims with manufacturers, fleet owners and service providers to roll out pilot charging infrastructure.
To support wider adoption of EVs, BYPL has volunteered its power distribution networks for research on the impact of renewable power sources and EV charging on the electric network. This aligns with the twin objectives of the Government to accelerate the use of EVs as well as promote renewable energy in the country.

Today’s news follows the launch of the Government of India’s National E-Mobility Programme in March, which will see the purchase of 20,000 government electric vehicles. This is in line with India’s most recent stated ambition of ensuring that 30% of all vehicles on the road are electric by 2030.
Through EV100, leading businesses can help increase demand for EVs and improve the availability of charging infrastructure –currently a significant barrier to EV adoption in India. Together, this will accelerate a much-needed shift in the market, bringing down costs to make EVs more accessible for all.
There are now 19 members of EV100 from a wide range of sectors, committed to switching to EVs across their operations globally. More announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
