As Australia celebrates national science week AMMA is pleased to provide members an insight into our successful new Bright Future STEM primary school program.

AMMA’s Bright Future STEM program inspires the next-gen about a resources and energy career through hands-on activities and role models raising awareness of the sector and the role of STEM.

Students learn about the sector’s rewarding and diverse careers while learning more about future STEM opportunities as it continues to evolve and change.

AMMA is pleased to release an exciting video highlighting the early success of the Bright Future STEM program.

The program has hosted three events to date, with the latest Middlemount event (see related story) another huge success, thanks to role models from key local employer Anglo American.

It followed the first of the 2019 Bright Future STEM events at Melbourne’s Burwood Heights Primary School last month, involving Newcrest Mining, MMG and ExxonMobil Australia (see related story) and also at Corinda State Primary School (see related story).

AMMA’s Bright Future STEM program will visit a dozen schools across Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania in 2019.

AMMA thanks its members who have participated with Bright Future STEM to date, and encourages other members to learn how they can get involved.

Celebrating importance role of science

Held from 10-18 August, National Science Week is the annual opportunity for Australians to meet scientists, discuss hot topics, do an experiment and celebrate the social and economic impact of science on our nation.

Australians from all walks of life are invited to celebrate all things science and technology at more than 1,900 registered events across the country for National Science Week.

Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews said National Science Week gives us all a chance to recognise the importance of science, research and innovation, which are key drivers of the Government’s plan for a stronger economy.

“When it comes to science, the next generation holds the keys to our economic future,” Minister Andrews said.

“Sparking children’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects from an early age is at the forefront of the Morrison Government’s support for science.

“We know that many of the jobs of the future will require STEM skills and it’s crucial that students are studying it through primary and high school.

“STEM skills can be the launch-pad of many careers and we want to inspire all students to take up and stick with STEM subjects.”

National Science Week events will be held in museums, libraries, galleries, research institutions, schools, universities, parks and even shopping centres. Hundreds of schools and workplaces will also be holding ‘Brain Break’ science-themed morning teas.
