The CCC has made two new senior appointments to its secretariat, concluding a process which delivers a new-look leadership team for the organisation.

Mike Thompson has been appointed as Director of Analysis, a new post which spans the Committee’s analytical work on climate change mitigation and adaptation for the first time. Mike will lead the Committee’s work on the delivery challenges of net-zero across the economy, and provide analytical input on the Committee’s adaptation agenda with particular focus on the links between mitigation and adaptation in land use and buildings.

Dr David Joffe is the Committee’s new Head of Carbon Budgets. David will manage the Committee’s central mitigation team and lead the preparation of new advice to Government on the sixth carbon budget, due in 2020. He will also oversee the CCC’s energy infrastructure team, focussing on a range of whole-economy integrated energy issues.

Adrian Gault, previously the Committee’s Chief Economist, moves into a new role as Chief Assurance Officer. The post aims to build on the Committee’s rigorous assurance processes, and provide yet further analytical challenge to the Committee’s work.

Kathryn Brown continues in her role as Head of Adaptation, leading the Adaptation Committee’s analytical work programme to assess UK progress in preparing for climate change, and managing the secretariat’s adaptation team.

Penny Seera remains as Head of Corporate Services, providing financial oversight, leading the organisation’s corporate strategy and team, and ensuring effective compliance and governance.

The CCC is entering an intense period of activity, including the delivery of a new report on reducing emissions from land use in early 2020, advice on the sixth carbon budget, a pivotal 2020 mitigation progress report to Parliament, and preparation of the third UK Climate Change Risk Assessment evidence report due in 2021. The Committee will also support UK leadership of COP26, a major international climate change conference taking place in Glasgow next year.

CCC Chief Executive, Chris Stark, said: “The next two years will be critical in delivering tangible UK action on climate change, and the Committee has a pivotal role to play in advising Government and reporting progress to Parliament. I’m delighted to have secured such a talented leadership team to shape and deliver our ambitious agenda, and I congratulate our new appointees on their success.”
