Taronga Conservation Society Australia is a not-for-profit conservation organisation working towards saving endangered wildlife from extinction. The Society operates Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, as well as the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning and Taronga Wildlife Retreat.

Taronga sees first-hand the impact of climate change on wildlife and this has spurred the society to achieve carbon neutral certification as an organisation against the National Carbon Offset Standard.

Taronga’s certification comes six years ahead of their goal to be carbon neutral by 2025. Alongside this achievement the organisation is working towards further reducing their emissions by implementing energy efficiency measures, encouraging behaviour change among staff  and  installing mid to large-scale solar PV at Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo .

To compensate for the remaining emissions and achieve carbon neutral status, Taronga invested in a hydropower project in India through the purchase of carbon offset units. In addition to the carbon reduction, these units are linked with a revegetation project in Australia which also provides local biodiversity benefits.
