Are you championing and accelerating the clean energy revolution?

If so, read on.

Mission Innovation Champions is a new program to celebrate innovative individuals who are accelerating the clean energy revolution. The program will recognise exceptional researchers and innovators who are developing novel ways of making energy cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable.

Who can be a Champion?

Champions are individuals with a track record of progressing creative new ideas that can drive the pace and scale of the clean energy revolution—the people who are inventing the products and services of the future or discovering the science that underpins them.

You could be working in a government laboratory, a local university, a research firm, or even have recently launched a clean technology start-up company.

You may be from 'traditional' inventor disciplines such as sciences, engineering, mathematics, or architecture, or from an emerging field.

What’s in it for you?

One of the main advantages of being a Champion will be the recognition received by the Mission Innovation community, as well as the visibility received through the outreach communication efforts of the Mission Innovation Secretariat.

Mission Innovation will highlight the Champions’ stories and ideas at international meetings, as well as on the Mission Innovation website and social media channels.

Finally, selected Champions will be flown to the fourth Mission Innovation ministerial meeting in Vancouver, Canada in May 2019, where there may be additional opportunities to interact directly with Ministers, research and business leaders and other Champions from around the world.

Department of the Environment and Energy Terms and Conditions

Background

Australia is a member of Mission Innovation (MI), a global initiative of 23 countries and the European Union that aims to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation through a combination of increased public investment, concerted international research collaboration, and improved engagement with the private sector.

MI Champions is a new recognition program to celebrate and support innovative individuals who are accelerating the clean energy revolution.

One Champion from each MI member participating in the program will be selected, and the first cohort of Champions will be awarded in May 2019, at the fourth MI ministerial meeting in Vancouver.

Terms of award

The Department of the Environment and Energy will support the individual selected as the Australian Champion in the Mission Innovation Champions Program, to travel to Vancouver for the awards ceremony and associated events.

The Department will cover the costs of:

  • direct return economy-class air travel between a capital city in Australia and Vancouver;
  • accommodation in Vancouver for the duration of the fourth MI ministerial meeting; and
  • a living allowance.

The return date of the trip may be extended at the Champion’s expense.

All other in-country costs (such as visas, transportation and travel insurance) are the responsibility of the successful candidate.

Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • attend the full program of events of the fourth MI ministerial meeting; and
  • submit a report, providing evidence demonstrating that the funds have been appropriately expended, within one month of the completion of the Vancouver meeting.
