NAIROBI – September 18, 2018 –The Global NDC Implementation Partners (GNI+) announced today that it has secured funding from the German International Climate Initiative (IKI) to launch a new partnership to support Kenya in implementing its climate change goals.

GNI+ brings together the combined expertise of AECOM, Baker McKenzie, and Climate Policy Initiative to help selected countries develop and enhance legal, policy, financial, institutional, and governance frameworks. It aims to help governments mobilize private investment at scales that can deliver impact on climate change and sustainable development.

Climate change poses a serious challenge to Kenya’s economic development, as the key drivers of its economy, including agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, are climate-sensitive. GNI+ will help address this by: analyzing current or planned policy frameworks to determine the extent to which they accommodate or inhibit climate change action measures; supporting efforts to access international public finance and attract private investors; designing implementation plans which will identify feasible climate change projects in line with Kenya’s goals; and, creating a cost-effective system for tracking mitigation actions and progress towards climate goals.

In Kenya, GNI+ will work in close partnership with the Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Climate Change Directorate, and in collaboration with the National Treasury and relevant sectoral ministries, and other public and private stakeholders.

“GNI+ maximizes impact by building on its partners’ existing collaborations with governments, multilateral agencies, and private investors to accelerate national climate action,” said Dr. Barbara Buchner, Executive Director of Climate Finance at Climate Policy Initiative. “We are excited to help Kenya drive transformational change and build local capacity in support of sustainable development.”

Robert Spencer, Director – Sustainable Development, AECOM, said, “AECOM brings extensive expertise in low carbon development to the GNI+ partnership in Kenya. This global capability is strengthened by our established climate policy and infrastructure team in Nairobi, which has delivered technical advice and training to the Kenyan government for many years. The new GNI+ program in Kenya reinforces our commitment to working with the government to help it address and adapt to climate change and its effects.”

Martijn Wilder, Head of Climate Change law at Baker McKenzie also added that, “The aim of GNI+ is to bring the best technical, law and governance, and finance expertise to assist governments ensure their NDCs are bankable and deliver real investment to deliver low carbon economies ”
