Mr Macron announced the creation of the High Council for Climate Action (HCAC) as part of a series of new measures in a speech made today (27 November) on ecological transition.

Prof Le Quéré is Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and Professor of Climate Change Science and Policy at UEA. She said: “I am delighted to take on the presidency of the new High Council on Climate Action of France. The High Council will provide independent advice to the French government on how to reduce its carbon emissions, considering the economic and social impacts on households and businesses.

“As a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change, a similar independent committee informing the UK government on climate actions, I look forward to sharing ideas and enhance the world leadership of these two nations in their efforts to address climate change while sustaining prosperous economies.”

The High Council will report every five years on the trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions in France. Every year, it will issue an advisory opinion on the fixed trajectory and the implementation of the concrete operations, economic sustainability and the impact on the balance of foreign trade.
