H137. Urban Ecohydrology: New Concepts, Observations, and Models

Session Description:

The search for sustainable solutions in urban environments is raising interest in the ecological aspects of urban planning and design, promoting a shift towards greener cities. Therefore, in addition to civil engineering approaches, concepts of hydrology, ecology, plant physiology, and meteorology are increasingly used to support urban solutions. This session aims to discuss advances in: (i) quantitative assessments of ecosystem services (e.g., microclimate regulation, stormwater runoff management, water quality control, carbon emission reduction, biodiversity, food production) provided by urban green and blue spaces; (ii) monitoring and modeling the environmental, social, and economic benefits of urban ecological solutions at different scales; (iii) new methods for observing or simulating water, carbon, nutrient, and energy fluxes in urban areas, including innovative process-based approaches for modeling the coupled urban-hydrological-biosphere system; (iv) plant physiological responses to the urban environment and their implications for plant functioning; and (v) methodologies to embed ecological considerations in urban planning.
