Introduction

Work to create a longer walk at Hokitika Gorge is almost complete.

Date:  23 January 2020

Contractors are laying the foundations for work to build a second bridge at Hokitika Gorge, which will link two sections of new track. This will create a loop with spectacular views of the gorge and the West Coast bush.

The timber decked suspension bridge, which will extend for 90 m across the upper gorge, will offer stunning views of the upper gorge and surrounding forest canopy.

The work at the gorge is a joint project between DOC and Westland District Council, funded by DOC and council-sourced tourism infrastructure funding.

Nicole Kunzmann, Hokitika Operations Manager says the Gorge is becoming an increasingly popular visitor destination and the extended walk will add to its popularity.

“In the past year 78,000 people visited the Gorge, compared to 45,000 three years ago.”

“The loop walk, once it’s complete will take around an hour, compared to the current 20 minute there-and-back stroll. The Hokitika Gorge is increasingly becoming a must see destination on the West Coast. Extending the walk will add to the attractiveness of Hokitika as a visitor destination, hopefully keeping people in the area longer.”

The bridge and track are expected to be completed by the end of April when an opening event is planned.
