The National Science Foundation funded Carbonate Critical Zone Research Coordination Network is accepting applications to participate in the Pennsylvania Field Workshop which will be held August 2-5, 2020 at Temple University in Philadelphia with a field trip to Central PA. During the field trip we will examine recent and historic monitoring in the well-known karst springs described in Shuster and White (1971) and visit with researchers at the Shale Hills CZ Observatory. During the field trip and after we will provide training on new data logging techniques.
The workshop has several goals. We will examine how increasing carbonate mineral content impacts CZ processes, up to and including pure carbonate CZs. This review will identify information gaps and available data and tools to define and address relevant research questions. The workshop is also expected to build consensus on future research needs. To guide discussion, the Steering Committee has identified a set of related themes that will focus disciplinary break out session discussions. The discussions will inform future work within interdisciplinary teams of how data, tools and methods can be integrated to understand the role of carbonate minerals in CZs. Workshop outcomes will include white papers, peer-reviewed publications, and seed ideas for proposal development spearheaded by interdisciplinary working groups.
We anticipate approximately 40 participants in the workshop, although the final number will depend on availability of funding. Participant support will be distributed to ensure a diverse range of disciplines, topics of interest, career stage and demographics.
