This letter, to the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, emphasises the crucial role that agriculture and the natural environment have to play in reducing UK emissions and preparing for a changing climate.

The joint letter, from the Committee on Climate Change and the Adaptation Sub-Committee, highlights:

• the lack of progress in reducing UK emissions from agriculture over the past six years
• that net carbon sequestration (capturing or storing carbon dioxide) from UK land use and forestry is also projected to decline
• that although some action has been taken to reduce the environment’s vulnerability to climate change, climate risk is still increasing across a number of key areas
• that there is a unique opportunity to start addressing the failings of current policies
• a number of priorities for agriculture, land use and natural environment policy after the UK leaves the EU
