Leading-edge stormwater professionals from around the world will attend the 2020 National Stormwater Symposium, now only weeks away. The symposium, offering three interactive workshops, two eye-opening tours, and 17 informative technical sessions, is a one-stop-shop for stormwater professionals to explore the new trends and technologies shaping today’s stormwater management landscape.

“If you are a stormwater professional who can only attend one conference this year, it should be the National Stormwater Symposium,” said Adriana Caldarelli, director of the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) Stormwater Institute, which is hosting the event. “Nowhere else will you find the level of experience, knowledge, or specialized stormwater expertise that our symposium presenters demonstrate.”

The 2020 National Stormwater Symposium will take place March 15-17 at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Register to attend by Feb. 7 to save on conference costs and read on for details about symposium programming.

Hands-on lessons

On Sunday, March 15, hit the ground running by attending a pre-conference workshop. This year’s workshop options, all moderated by industry-leading stormwater professionals, focus on incorporating cutting-edge technologies into stormwater infrastructure, considering outside-the-box approaches to stormwater project financing and delivery, and planning stormwater management facilities with the future in mind.

All workshops require additional fees during registration.

Sign up for Workshop A: Intelligent Wet Weather Systems – Active Monitoring and Control, the symposium’s only full-day workshop, to explore how recent advances in big data, cloud computing, and machine learning can lead to smarter, more impactful stormwater infrastructure. Workshop attendees will study real-world examples of high-tech wet weather systems and how their technological components translate data about water quality and quantity into better flood prevention and public health protection. Workshop A will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Workshop B: Innovative Funding, Financing and Alternative Project Delivery Frameworks and Applications in the Stormwater Sector, an interactive, 3.5-hour session, will detail how such public financing options as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program and Clean Water State Revolving Fund can provide the necessary capital to support innovative stormwater management initiatives and infrastructure. The workshop also will detail the emerging concept of community-based public private partnership (CBP3) programs and their potential to change the way stormwater professionals approach traditional project delivery. Workshop B runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Lastly, Workshop C: Designing Successful Stormwater Facilities with Maintenance and Enforcement in Mind, will take place from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Workshop attendees will examine how such stormwater infrastructure factors as facility type, location, design, and approach can lead to unforeseen challenges and opportunities in consideration of life-cycle maintenance needs and ecological factors. Focused primarily on planning, participants will explore connections between theory and practice and learn how to navigate common pitfalls associated with designing stormwater facilities.

Explore Cincinnati

While attending the symposium, explore what makes Cincinnati a true destination for stormwater management professionals by taking an offsite tour. This year’s symposium offers two tours showcasing local approaches to green infrastructure and flood prevention.

On Tuesday, March 17, join staff of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) for a behind-the-scenes look at its ambitious Lick Run Greenway project. The tour, which includes both walking and driving components, brings attendees to several key components of the MSD’s $90 million stormwater management and CSO reduction project. Sign up for the tour, taking place from 1 to 4 p.m., during symposium registration for a first-hand look at a project shaping a more resilient Cincinnati.

Across the Ohio River, National Stormwater Symposium attendees have an open invitation to visit the main campus of Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1) of Northern Kentucky, a conference co-organizer. Guests can either explore the campus following a self-guided audio tour at any time during the symposium, or join a tour guided by SD1 staff on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. or Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. The campus, also known as Public Service Park, features more than 10 progressive stormwater best management practices including a vegetated roof, constructed wetlands, pervious pavements, and more.  Attendees can sign up for the tour with SD1 staff on the WEF website.

Something for everyone

The symposium’s technical program covers an array of topics appealing to all segments of the stormwater sector, from utility managers to regulators to equipment manufacturers. Ranging in length from one to three hours, each session details the most informative projects, practices, and perspectives chosen by the symposium’s steering committee from more than 160 received abstracts.

Topics covered in this year’s program include:

• infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance;
• outreach, education, and training strategies;
• environmental impact bonds and other innovative project financing strategies;
• providing incentives for green infrastructure;
• national regulatory, legislative, and legal considerations for stormwater programs;
• climate change resilience;
• differing approaches to stormwater management from six countries; and
• analyzing post-construction green infrastructure performance.

Stay in Cincinnati for an extra day to take part in a free post-conference special seminar on Quantifying and Monetizing Co-Benefits of Green Stormwater Infrastructure on March 18, during which stormwater professionals will explore ways to use new cloud-based decision support systems to quantify the life cycle costs, co-benefits, and expected performance of green infrastructure designs.
