Science and engineering research has changed dramatically in the 40 years since the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) was founded. New fields of research have emerged, interdisciplinary research and international collaboration have grown rapidly, and technological advances continue to reveal new avenues of inquiry. NSERC promotes and supports research in the natural sciences and engineering in Canadian postsecondary institutions by providing research grants and scholarships.

This assessment will examine leading practices and emerging trends in natural science and engineering research funding. It will consider how other international funding agencies are supporting research in these disciplines, how these agencies are evolving in response to emerging scientific trends, and how leading funding practices could be applied in Canada.
