ADB developing member economies received a total of $311 billion in remittances in 2019, which is nine times the amount they received in 2000.

Together, these economies received 43.5% of the world’s total remittances in 2019, compared to 28.0% two decades ago. Remittance inflows relative to GDP amounted to 1.3% last year among these economies, higher than the 0.8% worldwide figure.

These statistics indicate that the adverse effects of overseas lockdowns on remittances, and the hardships for households dependent on such income, are likely to be more pronounced in Asia and the Pacific than in other regions.
