Tenure-Track Position in Water Science
University of Pennsylvania: School of Arts and Sciences: School of Arts and Sciences - Earth and Environmental Science

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Open Date: Sep 22, 2020

Description: The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in Water Science, broadly defined, at the level of Assistant Professor. Exceptional applicants at the Associate or Full Professor level may also be considered. The Department is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and other underrepresented groups in earth and environmental sciences. We seek a scientist who examines the fundamental role of water within natural and/or human-influenced systems. Research may focus on any phase of water and its physical or (bio)chemical properties, at any scale, and employ experimental, theoretical, observational and/or computational approaches. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: hydrology, hydrogeology, limnology, aqueous geochemistry, and hydrometeorology. The work may inform the global water cycle and/or have applications to climate change or other environmental problems, natural hazards, conservation, or sustainability. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2021.

Penn’s Department of Earth and Environmental Science is interdisciplinary, encompassing physical, chemical, and biological approaches to understanding the Earth and its environments.  Additionally, the position may benefit from connections with The Water Center at Penn (https://watercenter.sas.upenn.edu/), the Environmental Innovation Initiative (https://provost.upenn.edu/eii), The Vagelos Center for Energy Research and Technology (https://web.sas.upenn.edu/viest-institute/), The Kleinman Center for Energy Policy (https://kleinmanenergy.upenn.edu/about) and the Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (http://ceet.upenn.edu/home/).

The successful applicant will have demonstrated excellence and productivity in research and the potential to excel in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. Candidates should submit materials through http://apply.interfolio.com/78685 and include: (i) CV, (ii) statement of research experience and current goals, two page maximum, (iii) one page teaching statement to describe teaching experience, planned courses, and plans for recruiting, retaining, and mentoring a diverse student body and research team, and (iv) short, annotated description of up to five publications. Please also provide names and contact information of at least three referees. Referees will be contacted by the University with instructions on how to submit a letter to the website. Review of applicants will begin on November 20, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.
