IKEA has confirmed its place among corporate climate leaders by being named a Climate Savers partner by WWF. The business now joins the ranks of the most ambitious businesses in the Climate Business Network, WWF’s global corporate partnership program.

To achieve Climate Savers partner status, companies need to set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with a 1.5°C pathway and have these approved by the Science Based Targets initiative; to publicly disclose their climate plan and progress; and advocate for policies that support strong climate action. This, in addition to the business’ ambition and ongoing work to become climate positive by 2030 and its commitment to inspire climate action in all parts of society, has led WWF to recognise IKEA as a Climate Savers partner.

“To achieve a net-zero future and avoid the devastating impacts a warmer world will bring to our societies and economies, we all need to work together. IKEA has demonstrated its commitment to climate action by meeting the intensive criteria needed to become a Climate Savers partner,” said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, WWF’s Global Climate & Energy Lead. “We are also excited to work together on the next frontier in corporate climate leadership by creating a framework for businesses who aim to become climate positive.”

IKEA’s participation in WWF’s Climate Business Network is an extension of its partnership with the environmental NGO which began in 2002. The partnership aims to safeguard and manage natural resources and transform business for the benefit of people and planet.

“IKEA is very pleased to continue our work with WWF, including the development of a credible, global framework for what it means to be a climate positive business. Together with WWF and others IKEA is committed to contributing to global efforts ensuring climate action is based on science and transparency, as we remain committed to contribute in limiting climate change to 1.5°C.” says Andreas Ahrens, Head of Climate at Inter IKEA Group

Through the partnership, IKEA will also contribute to and support a Science Based Targets initiative project which aims to set a standard for climate goals connected to land use and carbon removals from forestry and agriculture. To date, there are no similar standards or tools allowing businesses to measure and set science-based targets on emissions from these sectors. Developing this is key in order to encourage more business action in these areas, and meeting the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global heating to 1.5°C.

Together, WWF and IKEA will also work to advocate for stronger climate action by governments and related policy shifts.
