Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - 25 February 2021; With over one million internally displaced people in Burkina Faso, the European Union has launched a project to support four of the cities most impacted

The 18 month project called Increasing resilience of communities impacted by internal displacement and Covid-19 being implemented by UN-Habitat, will focus on increasing access to adequate housing, basic infrastructure and building local capacity on urban planning for better managing rapid urban population growth.

As insecurity has forced many to flee their homes, some cities in the Central Nord and Sahel regions have seen their population doubling or tripling in a few months. Despite the generosity of the host communities, there is a lack of adequate housing and shelter and basic services and commodities, including water, sanitation and food.

The launch in Ouagadougou was opened by the European Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Mr. Wolfram Vetter, the Minister for Urbanization, Habitat and Cities, Mr Benewende Stanislas Sankara, and Burkina Faso’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ms. Metsi Makhetha.
