英文摘要 | The Chinhai spiny newt ( Echinotriton chinhaiensis ), an amphibian endemic to China, is listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List ([ 1 ][1]). Since it was first recognized in 1932 ([ 2 ][2]), several comprehensive field surveys have confirmed that the estimated population of 369 individuals ([ 3 ][3]–[ 5 ][4]) is limited to an area of less than one square hectare in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China ([ 6 ][5]). Without urgent action, this endangered species could become extinct. The Chinhai spiny newt faces a range of threats, the most critical of which is habitat loss ([ 7 ][6]). From late March to early May, female newts lay eggs on the shores of small still-water pools ([ 8 ][7]), where the eggs are vulnerable to drought, fungal infection, and predation ([ 4 ][8], [ 8 ][7]). Only 20% of the hatched newborns enter the water for a metamorphosis of approximately two months, during which mortality of the newts is as high as 84% ([ 8 ][7]). After metamorphosis, the newts leave the water and live in the surrounding habitats, which are engulfed by intense human activities, such as deforestation and urban expansion ([ 5 ][4]). Given their low mobility, the newts are limited to their existing range. Although the Chinhai spiny newt has been listed as a first-class Key National Protected Wild Animal Species ([ 9 ][9]), there are few coordinated plans for its conservation at the national or provincial level. In 2009, the municipal government established a nature reserve for the purpose of protecting the newts, but it was ineffective because of insufficient financial and institutional support ([ 6 ][5]). Their breeding pools remain behind the concrete walls of the reserve, but construction continues in the surrounding area that serves as the habitat for adults. To protect the species, stricter measures should be taken to protect the remaining population and habitat. The nature reserve should be better funded and expanded to protect the wild newt populations and their current and potential habitats. Artificial breeding of the newts could allow for reintroductions to suitable habitats outside of the current range. Effective conservation efforts and successful future reintroduction to the wild will require further research to understand the newt's life history in the wild. 1. [↵][10]1. F. Xie, 2. H.
