We wanted to highlight our session at the AGU 2021 Fall Meeting: River Corridor Hydro-Bio-Geochemistry Across Scales From Headwaters to Coasts
A brief abstract on what we hope to cover in this session is below:
River corridors provide multiple services which are essential for energy, food, and water security. These systems are characterized by a spatiotemporally dynamic, multidirectional continuum of chemical, biological, and physical exchanges spanning terrestrial, aquatic, and coastal systems. Variability in these exchanges is influenced by factors including hydromorphic features, sediment and microbial properties, and temporal fluctuations in river stage. Despite recent advances, knowledge gaps remain linking finer-scale biological, chemical, and physical processes with their cumulative effects on river corridor function. This session takes an integrated perspective of the river corridor, including not only the river channel, but also adjacent terrestrial and subsurface environments. We encourage abstracts using any approach (empirical, model-based, etc.) that emphasize biotic (e.g., microbes, plants) and/or abiotic (e.g., environmental history, physical setting/dynamics) factors that influence chemical, biological, and/or physical function across scales within river corridors.
