Launch of “The state of the world's land and water resources for food and agriculture (SOLAW 2021)" at the Land and Water Days 2021. REGISTER NOW!

The FAO Land and Water Division is pleased to invite you to the launch of "The state of the world's land and water resources for food and agriculture: Systems at breaking point (SOLAW 2021)", which will take place during the Land and Water Days from 8 to 9 December 2021.

During these two days, we will engage in lively presentations and discussions on key cross-cutting trends and global and regional perspectives on our land, soil and water resources which form the core of the global food system. Thematic information-driven sessions will inform on the alarming trends in natural resources at breaking point and to present innovative pathways to advance the transformation of our agri-food systems.

We will present the main findings and recommendations of the SOLAW 2021 Report which comes at a time when human pressures on the systems of land, soils and freshwater are intensifying, just when they are being pushed to their productive limits. The central theme of SOLAW 2021 is “Systems at breaking point”, providing solutions away from the business-as-usual approach, injecting a sense of urgency in making the necessary transformation at the roots of the global food systems - water, land and soils – and inspiring uptake by decision-makers at the global, regional and national levels.

Find the provisional programme of the Land & Water Days and the High Level Launch of SOLAW 2021 below. More will come in the next days, stay tuned!

PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME

The Land & Water Days will be held in English. A detailed agenda will be published shortly. Stay tuned!

Wednesday 8 December 2021 (CET)

10:00 – 10:30

Plenary Opening of the Land and Water Days

The opening session will provide an overview of current trends and issues in land, soils and water management and governance, and suggested actions to achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life.

10:30 - 11:30

Session 1 "Better Production: Integrated land & water systems for nutrition and food security"

This session will examine the inter-linkages between land and water systems in order to optimize food security and nutrition to meet the SDGs. Focus will be on pathways to improve soil, land and water productivity to enhance production while maintaining healthy ecosystems. Topics will include decision support and monitoring systems based on water accounting, tools to enhance soil and water productivity and water use efficiency, methods for sustainable soil, land and water management.

14:30 - 15:30

Session 2 "Better Environment: Climate mitigation and building farmers’ resilience through smart water and land management in conditions of water scarcity and land degradation"

This session will focus on climate mitigation and adaptation for land and water systems, in order to build farmer resilience and ecosystems restoration in the context of water scarcity. Based on an analysis of observed and potential impacts of climate change on agriculture, livestock and food systems in the regions, the session will highlight pathways to increase resilience of the systems to achieve food security, sustain livelihoods and protect the rural population from climatic shocks in the long term. Special focus will be given to the landscape approaches and nature-based solutions to sustainable land and water management in achieving adaptation and mitigation benefits.

Thursday 9 December 2021 (CET)

10:00 -11:30

Session 3: “Governance and tenure for sustainable management of land, soil and water resources”

This session will explore governance arrangements for the management of land, water and soils from global to local levels. Effective land and water governance can promote measures to protect and ensure the sustainability of water resources and to optimize the services and benefits obtained, supporting economic growth, food security, poverty reduction and environmental protection. This theme will address the institutional, legal and policy frameworks which provide the enabling conditions for sustainable land and water management across sectors, with a special focus on agriculture. It will showcase tools and solutions to improve inter-sectoral policy coherence, land and water tenure, effective land and water governance, and the gender dimension of good land and water governance.

12:30 - 14:00

High Level Launch of "The state of the world's land and water resources for food and agriculture 2021: Systems at breaking point (SOLAW 2021)"

A detailed agenda will be published shortly

14:30 - 15:30

Session 4 "Financing and investment for land and water sustainability"

This session will explore financing and investment opportunities for the sustainable management of land and water. With growing awareness of food production challenges and climate change concerns, innovative solutions are needed to provide incentives for land and water projects in the agricultural sector, enhancing productivity and attracting new investments. The session will address the need and potential for investments in land and water for agriculture in the region and will analyze enabling conditions for investments at policy, legal and institutional levels, including approaches to sound investment planning. Proven and innovative solutions and investment opportunities will be presented and discussed. Furthermore, approaches to financing investments through global financial mechanisms, as well as innovative solutions at the local level will be highlighted.
