The Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to provide research support to a new 3-year Discovery Project funded by the Australian Research Council. The project aims to develop the first nationwide assessment of carbon export via streams and rivers and will combine direct measurements from ecosystem observatories of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) with remote sensing and advanced statistical modelling. This is a 3-year position based at Charles Darwin University (CDU) in Darwin, Australia, with an expected start date between June–August 2022.
Responsibilities
The postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for coordinating the different components of the project in close collaboration with the team of investigators. Specifically, they will coordinate field work in remote locations of the Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania, contribute to protocol development for sampling (dissolved gases; organic and inorganic carbon) across TERN sites, and liaise with TERN collaborators. They will operate and maintain field instrumentation and oversee laboratory analyses. The postdoctoral research fellow will also be expected to lead data analysis, modelling, manuscript preparation, and to co-advise PhD students.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with:
- a PhD or equivalent level in environmental science, hydrology or biogeochemistry;
- advanced computational skills (e.g. R, MATLAB, Python) and demonstrated experience in the analysis of large datasets and in statistical modelling;
- knowledge of GIS and/or remote sensing methods;
- a record of peer-reviewed publications in Q1 journals as first author;
- fieldwork experience in remote locations.
Salary
This is a full-time position with starting salary at Academic Level A (~A$94,000 per annum) or Academic Level B (~A$104,000 per annum) based on experience and competencies, plus 17% employer contributions to superannuation.
