UCAR statement on the fire near the NCAR Mesa Lab

NCAR facilities did not sustain any damage

Mar 29, 2022 - by Staff

Antonio Busalacchi, the president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, has issued the following statement on the March 26 fire near the Mesa Lab:

On behalf of the staff of UCAR, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, first responders, and other emergency workers whose dedication prevented the wildland fire that ignited on March 26, 2022, from damaging our facilities.

The fire started very near the Mesa Lab, an iconic facility that has always been at the heart of NCAR’s important research in Earth system science. I am happy to report that the Mesa Lab did not suffer any structural or smoke damage. Thank you to everyone who checked in with us from near and far to share your concern about our staff and buildings. We understand that the Mesa Lab holds a very special place in the hearts of many people in our community.

I would also like to express that our thoughts are with the many people who had to evacuate their homes over the weekend, including some of our own staff. While we are relieved that no homes or lives were lost, we understand how traumatizing a fire so near to a neighborhood is in the aftermath of the devastating Marshall Fire.
