UCAR statement on the deaths of three OU meteorology students

Our organization offers condolences to their loved ones

May 2, 2022 - by Staff

The following statement is from Antonio Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). UCAR is a consortium of more than 120 universities, including the University of Oklahoma, which manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on behalf of the National Science Foundation.

On behalf of our staff, I would like to express our profound sadness over the loss of three University of Oklahoma meteorology students in a fatal car accident Friday night. We offer our condolences to the loved ones of Drake Brooks, Nicholas Nair, and Gavin Short, who had bright futures within our field.

One of the most rewarding parts of our work at UCAR and NCAR is mentoring the next generation of atmospheric scientists. Students bring a fresh enthusiasm for our science that energizes us and reminds us of the vital nature of our research, which is one of the reasons a loss of three such passionate students from our field and from our extended UCAR family is tragic and deeply felt.

We join our colleagues and friends at the University of Oklahoma, where so many of our staff maintain strong connections, in mourning this loss.
