正文(英文) | OBSERVER: New Copernicus Marine Service web portal makes ocean science accessible to allDive into our Ocean Explainers Why is the ocean important? How is it monitored? What current policies are in place to help safeguard it? The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) has developed a set of ‘Ocean Explainers’ to answer these questions and many more on the CMEMS website. The set of engaging web pages includes explanations as well as illustrations and trends, bringing information about the ocean within everyone’s reach.
We see terms such as ‘climate change,’ ‘ocean acidification’ and the ‘ocean-climate nexus’ increasingly being mentioned in the media. Natural cycles, global warming, and other stressors like pollution and overexploitation resulting from/related to human activity impact the properties of the ocean, which are changing at an alarming rate. Informed environmental policies and individual actions are vital if humanity is to preserve the ocean. To deliver on this commitment, stakeholders, and individuals must have a basic understanding of ocean science. For example, knowing how the ocean is monitored and what can be done to maintain it sustainably are just two questions stakeholders need to consider when making policy or conducting business.
In an effort to address the need for information, CMEMS has launched a new set of educational webpages called Ocean Explainers. Drawing on the experience of Mercator Ocean International, a centre for ocean expertise and modelling, the pages provide insights into four key topics:
What is the Copernicus Marine Service? The marine element of the Copernicus Component of the EU Space programme provides free, regular and systematic authoritative information on the state of the Blue (physical), White (sea ice) and Green (biogeochemical) Ocean, on a global and regional scale. CMEMS is designed to serve EU policies and international legal commitments related to ocean governance, to cater for the needs of society at large for global ocean knowledge, and to boost the Blue Economy across all maritime sectors. It achieves this by providing full, free, and open state-of-the-art ocean data and information to all ocean stakeholders, including decision-makers, enterprises, NGOs, the scientific community and society at large. By supporting major EU and international policies and initiatives, CMEMS contributes to combating pollution, protecting the marine environment, ensuring maritime safety and routing, promoting sustainable use of ocean resources, developing renewable marine energy resources, supporting blue growth, monitoring and forecasting the climate and more. It also aims to increase awareness amongst the general public by providing European and global citizens with information about ocean-related issues.
Bridging the gap between science and society The Ocean Explainers add to an already-extensive collection of CMEMS ocean literacy resources. Individually and collectively, these aim to bridge the gap between the scientific community and society, including policymakers, ocean advocates and youth. Protecting the ocean and mitigating threats resulting from human activity is increasingly dependent on the ability to understand ocean dynamics. The more we know about our ocean, the better equipped we are to conserve it. |
