The Center of Excellence for Clean Energy will be an integrated center for research, development of research results, education, capacity building implementation, and facilitation of investment in clean energy development with three main focal points: information, technology, and financing.

The center was announced today at the Bali Clean Energy Forum, with the launch of a new online energy policy transparency and decision analysis tool which IIASA researchers helped design. Although the physical center is yet to be built, the online tool will already make it possible for policymakers in Indonesia to examine the costs, benefits, and tradeoffs of various energy policy choices, with a particular focus on renewable energy.

“We aim for the portal to be a one-stop shop for data on renewable energy resource availability, as well as user-friendly analysis tools that policymakers can use to make sound decisions. It consolidates data coming from various sources in order to increase transparency which will also be a useful tool for investors in renewable energy projects,” says Ping Yowargana, a researcher in the IIASA Ecosystems Services and Management Program, who has been working closely with Indonesian policymakers and IIASA researchers on the development of the tool.

The interactive "sustainable energy one map" aims to improve clean energy-related data transparency and provide spatially explicit analyses to support decision making resulting in a sustainable implementation of clean energy. The platform is still in development but available online. http://cleanenergy.esdm.go.id/energy-map.php

Lauding the new center, the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said said, "CoE will become a channel of contact for national preparedness in realizing an energy system based on clean and sustainable energy sources, because it supports efforts to accelerate the development of renewable energy up to 23% in the composition of the national energy mix by 2025. For a period of four years, the CoE will focus on supporting the efforts of developing 35 MW of electricity program, of which 25 percent or about 8.8 GW will come from renewable energy. "

“We expect that the special methodology for the new online energy policy transparency and decision analysis tool will also quickly find its way into energy system planning in neighboring Southeast Asia. This is one of the aims of the IIASA Tropical Futures Initiative,” says Florian Kraxner, deputy director of the IIASA Ecosystems Services and Management Program.
