Future Earth is organising two participatory events for innovators from research, city planning, policy, business, civil society and more at this year’s World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The forum, which will run from 7 to 13 February 2018, is a marquee event that draws together a wide range of professionals working around urban issues.

Future Earth’s activities at the forum, which include a side event and a networking event, will focus on how research can contribute to the New Urban Agenda – an international roadmap for developing sustainable and equitable cities. The events will also provide an introduction to Future Earth’s Urban and Health Knowledge-Action Networks. These research networks seek to bring together the diverse knowledge the world needs to address the critical challenges facing cities and to safeguard the health of human populations and the environment.

Cities and Science: Leveraging the knowledge-action network approach to implement the New Urban Agenda

Cities are increasingly leaders in the creation and transition to more sustainable and resilient pathways. In view of facing a global human population of approximately nine billion by 2050, science, policies and practical solutions are critical to enable equitable, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements. Given such challenges and opportunities, it is critical that research networks assemble and increase cooperation between international research networks to spur action in support of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. This networking event, hosted by the Urban Knowledge-Action Network of Future Earth will demonstrate how bringing an integrated approach to scientific research, knowledge mobilisation, policy-making and investment can produce transformations. This open event brings together an international network of participants from academia, government, civil society, practitioners and the private sector from all around the world in a highly engaging event modeled as a world cafe.

Leveraging the power of science to implement the New Urban Agenda: The role of Knowledge-Action Networks in creating healthy, sustainable cities

Urban expansion will reach unprecedented levels in the decades to come. By 2050, two-thirds of the world population are predicted to live in towns and cities (UN Habitat,2016). In light of this, cities will play an increasingly important role in global sustainability, and will be at the forefront of challenges related to health and climate. Given such challenges and opportunities, Future Earth has assembled Knowledge-Action Networks (in the areas of Health and Urban science and others) that provide an engagement platform for researchers, national and municipal decision-makers and planners and practitioners to co-design and co-produce knowledge for action to accelerate implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Through presentation and discussion of pilot-projects, innovative research, new data-sets and scenarios demonstrating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda in both the Global South and Global North, the event highlights how bringing an integrated approach to scientific research, knowledge transfer, policy-making and investment is producing transformational change. Great emphasis is placed on demonstrating the scalability and repeatability of presented case-studies.
