Gély acknowledges that while water and sanitation are issues high on political agenda, there are great challenges ahead: “Current water management practices are just unsustainable – we cannot carry on this way”, he says. Some predict that by 2050, over 50% of the global population may be living under water stress, and 45% of the world’s gross domestic product may come from water-stressed regions.
“What is needed is a paradigm shift to meet the SDG 6 and ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. A report like this tackles disparity and will enable countries to get a full interpretation that can help evaluate policy frameworks and development strategies”, Gély adds.
