英文摘要
Steel industry: the decarbonisation imperative

As days pass, there is increased evidence and response to GHG emissions and global warming leading to climate change. The Paris Agreement, 2015, has set the framework for a global response to climate change among world leaders to strive for keeping atmospheric temperature increase well below 2 °C and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 °C.

The 194 national governments and the European Union have signed the agreement which include some of the world’s biggest polluting industries. Every manufacturing sector is exploring ways and means to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations. The steel industry, the backbone of all infrastructural developments, is tipped to play a major role in the above decarbonisation agenda.

Major producers have already tied up with renowned technology providers and started research and development efforts, putting up pilot and semi-commercial level plants and reviewing the economics of greening the industry.

This paper tries to explore the current efforts towards achieving sustainability in steelmaking with a particular reference to the Indian industry.
